Criteria and Procedure for Fellowship

LIBERIA COLLEGE OF PHYSICIANS AND SURGEONS(LCPS)

CATEGORIES FOR FELLOWSHIP

Foundation Fellowship was conferred at inception of the College. Fellowship thereafter is conferred by training, election or honorary as determined by the Postgraduate Medical Council. The categories of Fellowship are:

  1. Foundation Fellowship
  2. Fellowship by Training
  3. Fellowship by Election
  4. Honorary Fellowship

A.  CRITERIA FOR FELLOWSHIP

The following are required for one to become a Fellow of the Liberia College of Physicians and Surgeons (LCPS):

A1.Criteria for Foundation Fellowship

  • Criteria for Foundation Fellowship was established at the inception of the College;
    • Specialist medical practitioners who were actively involved with training programs in Liberia for at least five years
    • Specialist medical practitioners who made significant contributions in the field of medicine in Liberia 
    • Eminent retired medical professionals resident in Liberia at the time of the establishment of the College
    • Specialist medical practitioners with at least five years of cumulative professional experience in Liberia
  • Medical specialists in the various disciplines nominated their peers; and
  • Nominated Medical Specialists were vetted by the Postgraduate Medical Council and elected only once by the College as Foundation Fellows.

A2.Criteria for Fellowship by Training

  • Letter of Application addressed to the Secretary General
  • Payment of application fee of US$750.00 (Seven-Fifty United States Dollars) or its equivalent in Liberian Dollars at the prevailing rate (non-refundable/ non-transferable)
  • A medical doctor (MD) from a recognized medical school
  • Licensed by LMDC to practice medicine in Liberia
  • Practiced as a medical doctor for at least seven years
  • Must have undergone training at the Membership level at LCPS and completed all exams, including a final exit exam, or
  • If residency training completed outside of LCPS, documents and content of training will be reviewed by LCPS
  • Submit a completed application form
  • Provide evidence of publication in local or foreign medical or scientific journal
  • Payment of dues and fees

      A2. Criteria for Fellowship by Election

  • Letter of Application addressed to the Secretary General
  • Payment of application fee of US$750.00 (Seven-Fifty United States Dollars) or its equivalent in Liberian Dollars at the prevailing rate (non-refundable/ non-transferable)
  • A medical doctor (MD) from a recognized medical school
  • At least 10 years post qualification inclusive of 5 years in specialized area
  • Licenses by LMDC to practice medicine in Liberia
  • Attendance at a minimum 4 national, regional, or international conferences;
  • At least 2 peer reviewed publications
  • Payment of dues and fees

    A3. Criteria for Honorary Fellowship:

  • Any individual (Liberia or non- Liberian) in or outside Liberia who has made or is making significant contribution to the health care delivery system in Liberia may be nominated to receive LCPS Honorary Fellowship

    B. PROCEDURE FOR FELLOWSHIP

    B.1   Procedure for Fellowship by Training and Fellowship by Election

  • Application to LCPS – completed application form, submission of CV and academic credentials
  • LCPS Faculty Committee reviews application form, CV, credentials and other supporting documents
  • Approval/denial flows from LCPS Faculty Committee to Joint Faculty Board to the Executive Members then to the Postgraduate Medical Council

   B.2   Procedure for Honorary Fellowship

  • Nomination by a Fellow of LCPS
  • Completion and submission of nomination form to LCPS
  • LCPS Faculty Committee reviews nomination form and other supporting documents
  • Approval/denial flows from LCPS Faculty Committee to Joint Faculty Board to the Executive Members then to the Postgraduate Medical Council
